Product description

UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G — Broadcast Capture That Fits in Your Pocket Built around a machined metal chassis barely larger than a credit card, the UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G gives you a professional SDI and HDMI capture front end for a laptop rig. One USB-C cable carries both video and power, so there is nothing else to pack, plug in or lose on location. 3G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 capture — every SD and HD standard up to 1080p60 USB-C 40Gb/s (USB4 / Thunderbolt 4) — a single cable for video and power, no PSU 10-bit broadcast quality — uncompressed 4:2:2 and 4:4:4, Apple ProRes, DNxHD and DNxHR 10-bit 4:2:2 YUV and up to 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 for VFX, compositing and colour grading 16 channels of embedded SDI audio (8 channels via HDMI) at 48 kHz / 24-bit SMPTE 425M level A and level B switchable 3G-SDI, plus RP 188 timecode and closed captions Works with OBS Studio, vMix, Wirecast, DaVinci Resolve, Zoom and more Tiny and light — 91.9 x 45 x 24.9 mm, only 158 g Mac, Windows and Linux support, with a 1 year limited manufacturer's warranty 3G-SDI and HDMI — Capture Anything, From Cameras to Consoles Two of the most useful video connections in the industry, in one tiny box. The BNC connector accepts 3G-SDI, HD-SDI and SD-SDI at 270Mb, 1.5G and 3G rates, so you can plug in broadcast cameras, switchers, routers and legacy decks over long cable runs. The HDMI 2.0 input handles cameras, computers, game consoles and set-top devices. The video connection switches automatically between SD and HD as your source changes format. One Cable Does Everything — USB4 Power and Video The UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is powered entirely over its USB Type-C connection. Plug a single cable into the USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 port of your laptop and you have a complete capture system — no power brick, no wall socket, no adapter hunting on site. The 40Gb/s USB connection has more than enough bandwidth for full 10-bit uncompressed HD, so nothing is thrown away on the way to your disk. 10-Bit Broadcast Quality — Uncompressed, ProRes and DNx Capture to compressed formats such as Apple ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444, DNxHD and DNxHR when you need efficient editing files, or record uncompressed 8-bit and 10-bit 4:2:2 and 10-bit 4:4:4 when quality is everything. SDI colour precision reaches 8, 10 and 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 up to 1080p30, with 8 and 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 in all standards — exactly the headroom that visual effects, keying and colour grading work demands. Live Streaming with OBS, vMix and Wirecast Feed a switcher or camera output straight into your streaming machine. The included Blackmagic drivers expose the Recorder 3G to OBS Studio, vMix, Wirecast, Zoom, CasparCG, Xsplit Broadcaster and other live production software, so church services, esports, webinars and corporate town halls get a clean, broadcast quality source instead of a webcam. Media Express and LiveKey are included for standalone capture and playback. Archive Legacy Tapes, Decks and Cameras Digitising an archive is one of the most common reasons studios reach for a capture card. With SD-SDI and HD-SDI support and hardware colourspace conversion, the Recorder 3G pulls footage off Betacam, HDCAM, DigiBeta and DV decks and lands it in DaVinci Resolve or Media Express as clean ProRes or uncompressed files, complete with embedded audio and timecode. The same box goes into a backpack afterwards for an offsite shoot. Frequently Asked Questions What computer do I need? A Mac, Windows or Linux computer with a USB Type-C port running at 40Gb/s — that means USB4 or Thunderbolt 4. Blackmagic requires the 40Gbps signalling rate, so a standard USB 3.x Type-C port is not sufficient. Does it need a power adapter? No. It is bus powered over the same USB-C cable that carries the video, so there is nothing else to plug in. Can it capture 4K? No. The Express Recorder 3G is an SD and HD device, up to 1080p60 (plus 2K DCI over SDI). For Ultra HD capture, look at the UltraStudio 4K Mini or the DeckLink range — talk to us and we will size it for your workflow. Can I record my PlayStation or Nintendo Switch gameplay? Yes, via the HDMI input — provided the source is not HDCP copy protected. Game consoles typically disable HDCP for gameplay, but streaming apps on the same console will not capture. Does it work with OBS? Yes. Install the free Blackmagic Desktop Video drivers and the device appears as a video capture source in OBS Studio, vMix, Wirecast, Zoom and other live streaming software. Is this the same as the older UltraStudio Recorder 3G? No. The Express model is the 2026 update, moving to a USB-C 40Gb/s (USB4 / Thunderbolt 4) interface with 10-bit uncompressed and HDR-era colour handling, and adding HDMI 2.0 alongside 3G-SDI.
