Product description
UltraStudio Express Monitor 3G — A Broadcast Output for Your Laptop Editing and grading on a computer display alone means you are judging your image through the operating system's colour management, at whatever frame rate the desktop feels like. The UltraStudio Express Monitor 3G gives DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Media Composer a true, deterministic video output — the same signal a broadcast monitor, projector or TV would receive on air. 3G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 output — every SD and HD standard up to 1080p60 USB-C 40Gb/s (USB4 / Thunderbolt 4) — a single cable for video and power, no PSU 10-bit broadcast quality playback, with up to 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 colour precision HDR support — HDR metadata packing with HLG and PQ transfer characteristics on both SDI and HDMI 16 channels of embedded SDI audio (8 channels via HDMI) at 48 kHz / 24-bit Real time effects from DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro's Mercury Playback Engine and Avid Media Composer Rec 601, Rec 709 and Rec 2020 colour spaces with hardware colourspace conversion Tiny and light — 91.9 x 45 x 24.9 mm, only 160 g Mac, Windows and Linux support, with a 1 year limited manufacturer's warranty Grade and Edit on a Real Monitor — Anywhere Plug the Monitor 3G into your laptop, run a BNC or HDMI cable to a broadcast reference display, TV or projector, and DaVinci Resolve's viewer moves to the big screen at full resolution and correct frame rate. Because the output is driven by the hardware rather than the desktop, playback stays smooth and in sync — the way client review and colour work should be. One Cable Does Everything — USB4 Power and Video The UltraStudio Express Monitor 3G is powered entirely over its USB Type-C connection. One cable into a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 port carries video, audio and power, so a full monitoring setup travels in a jacket pocket — ideal for on-set DIT carts, edit-on-the-road workflows and pop-up grading suites. HDR Ready — HLG and PQ Both the SDI and HDMI outputs carry HDR metadata with HLG and PQ transfer characteristics, and the HDMI output automatically configures itself to the connected display. Whether you are finishing in Rec 709 or delivering Rec 2020 HDR, what you see on the reference monitor is what your deliverable will look like. Real Time Effects and 10-Bit Colour The Monitor 3G plays back DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro internal effects, Premiere Pro CC Mercury Playback Engine effects and Avid Media Composer internal effects in real time. SDI colour precision reaches 8, 10 and 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 up to 1080p30, with 8 and 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 in all standards, so gradients, keys and skin tones hold up on a proper display. Broadcast Graphics, Playout and Presentation Beyond editing, the Monitor 3G is a clean playout path for broadcast graphics and presentation software — CasparCG, Ventuz, ProPresenter, Resolume Arena, NewBlue Titler Live, Tools On Air and more — feeding a switcher over SDI with embedded audio, timecode and closed captioning. Pack it away in seconds and the same suite works on location tomorrow. Frequently Asked Questions What computer do I need? A Mac, Windows or Linux computer with a USB Type-C port running at 40Gb/s — that means USB4 or Thunderbolt 4. Blackmagic requires the 40Gbps signalling rate, so a standard USB 3.x Type-C port is not sufficient. Does it need a power adapter? No. It is bus powered over the same USB-C cable that carries video and audio. Can I use it as a second computer display? No — and that is the point. It is a dedicated video output for editing, grading and playout software, not a desktop monitor. Your video timeline plays out to it at true broadcast frame rates and colour, without desktop compositing in the way. Can it output 4K? No. The Express Monitor 3G is an SD and HD device, up to 1080p60 (plus 2K DCI over SDI). For Ultra HD monitoring, consider the UltraStudio 4K Mini or a DeckLink card — we can advise on the right one. Does it work with DaVinci Resolve on Linux? Yes. Blackmagic provides Media Express, Desktop Video Utility and drivers for Linux as well as Mac and Windows. Is this the same as the older UltraStudio Monitor 3G? No. The Express model is the 2026 update, moving to a USB-C 40Gb/s (USB4 / Thunderbolt 4) interface and adding HDR (HLG and PQ) metadata support on both SDI and HDMI.
